Nederland, Nijmegen, 23-7-2011Top, blad van de cannabis sativa, wietplant. The use of marihuana for medicinal purposes, also known as "compassionate use," has a long and established tradition in the medical cannon of Western society.Since March 2003 Marijuana went on sale at Dutch pharmacies to help bring relief to thousands of patients suffering from cancer, AIDS or multiple sclerosis.Around 7,000 patients were already eligible for prescription marijuana, sold in containers of .16 ounces at most pharmacies. Labeled "Cannabis" and tested by theMinistry of Health, the drug is covered by health insurance for the first time under a new law. Although marijuana is officially prohibited under Dutch law, authorities tolerate the sale of small quantities under a policy that distinguishes between hard drugs such as cocaine and heroine and so-called "soft-drugs" like marijuana.Medical Marijuana growers and pharmacies need licenses exempting them from prosecution.Foto: Flip Franssen/Hollandse Hoogte
